At the start of 2005 I was shocked to find out that 17 teenagers, mostly 13-14 years of age, had committed suicide in the area in which I grew up. This area is at the most 2 square miles in size. The news reports showed their friends talking about how life was pretty much pointless, and how they felt hemmed in with little to no community resources available to them. Many of these youths are coming from a 3rd generation unemployment background. They lack any respect for anything or anyone including themselves.
